Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 does not officially launch until October 23, but some players can begin the campaign on October 16. The important catch is that this is a digital preorder benefit, not a quiet early release of the entire game.
Here is exactly who qualifies, what unlocks early, and what you should check before paying.
The short answer
Activision says anyone who preorders or prepurchases a digital edition of Modern Warfare 4 on a supported platform gets access to the full campaign starting Friday, October 16. The company has not published a universal start hour, only that the window begins on October 16 in Pacific Time. Availability can therefore vary by storefront and time zone.
The early window covers the campaign only. DMZ early access begins Tuesday, October 20, while the worldwide launch for the full game is Friday, October 23. Multiplayer does not open simply because you can launch the story.
Who gets Modern Warfare 4 campaign early access?
You qualify by preordering either digital edition before launch:
- Digital Standard Edition: the base game plus the listed digital preorder bonuses.
- Vault Edition: the base game, preorder bonuses, operator and weapon packs, one season of BlackCell, and a DMZ deployment bonus.
Activision lists Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam, and Nintendo Switch 2 as supported launch platforms. The game is not coming to PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. A physical console copy does not include campaign early access, and Activision says physical copies cannot later use the separate Vault Edition upgrade.
On the US Xbox Store, the Standard Edition is listed at $69.99 and the Vault Edition at $99.99. Xbox also says the game is not included with Game Pass, so a subscription is not a route into the early campaign.
What can you play on October 16?
You can play the complete story campaign. Activision describes a conflict centered on the Korean Peninsula, with a South Korean squad fighting on the front lines while Captain Price pursues an off-book mission elsewhere. Missions include trench warfare in Korea, close-quarters fighting in New York, a chase through Paris, SAS night raids in Mumbai, and battles to reclaim occupied cities.
That is separate from the October 20 DMZ early-access window. It is also separate from multiplayer, which remains tied to the full October 23 release. If you are buying primarily for competitive play, the campaign head start has limited value.
Standard or Vault Edition?
The Standard Edition is the sensible choice for most campaign players. It includes the same October 16 campaign access and October 20 DMZ access as the Vault Edition. The extra $30 buys digital cosmetics, BlackCell access, and DMZ supplies rather than additional campaign missions.
The Vault Edition makes more sense if you already planned to buy BlackCell and expect to spend heavily in multiplayer or DMZ. Eligible returning Call of Duty players may also see a 10 percent loyalty discount on the Vault Edition through official digital stores. Check the price in your own platform account before assuming the discount applies.
Platform details worth checking before you preorder
Xbox buyers get Play Anywhere support on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC. Console multiplayer later requires the relevant paid online service, such as Game Pass Essential, PlayStation Plus, or Nintendo Switch Online. PC players need TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot, and Activision warns that a linked phone number may be required.
If you play on Xbox, our guide to Microsoft’s $49.99 Xbox Nano controller explains who the smaller gamepad is designed for. PlayStation owners can also check the October 2026 PS Plus catalog and tier dates before adding another purchase.
Is the early campaign worth preordering for?
Preorder only if you already expect to buy Modern Warfare 4 digitally. A seven-day campaign head start is useful if you want to finish the story before multiplayer and DMZ absorb your attention, but it is a weak reason to spend $70 by itself.
The safest move is to confirm the October 16 download or unlock notice in your platform store, verify your Activision account links, and leave time for a large installation. Activision’s official editions page is the best source for last-minute changes to access dates and eligibility.
