Minecraft launches natively on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 27, 2026, with Vibrant Visuals enabled by default and an updated Super Mario Mash-Up Pack. The best news for many U.S. players is that owners of the digital Nintendo Switch version can claim the Switch 2 Standard Edition upgrade free for a limited time.
The details matter, especially if you own a cartridge, are considering a premium edition, or use Minecoins across several platforms.
Is the Minecraft Switch 2 upgrade free?
Mojang says players who already own the digital version of Minecraft for Nintendo Switch can upgrade to the digital Switch 2 Standard Edition free in most territories, including the United States. The offer runs through the end of January 2027 and must be claimed through Nintendo eShop.
The official upgrade announcement specifically names digital ownership. It does not promise the same free path for a physical Switch cartridge. If your copy is physical, do not assume the cartridge unlocks a free digital license. Check the U.S. eShop listing while signed into the Nintendo Account that owns or uses your copy before purchasing anything.
The free offer covers Standard Edition. Existing owners can instead upgrade to Deluxe or Ultimate at discounted prices, according to Mojang, but the announcement does not list one universal U.S. discount because store pricing can vary.
What do Standard, Deluxe, and Ultimate include?
Every Switch 2 edition includes the base game and the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack with upgraded Vibrant Visuals support. Standard is therefore the sensible choice for returning players who already own Marketplace content or simply want the improved native version.
Deluxe adds three add-ons called Celebration Food, Rescue Dogs, and Plenty O’Blocks, plus three Character Creator items and 700 Minecoins. Ultimate includes those three add-ons plus Decocraft and Weapons + Tools, five Character Creator items, and 1,000 Minecoins.
Choose a higher edition for the included content, not because you expect better performance. Mojang lists the same Switch 2 visual foundation across all three editions.
What does Vibrant Visuals change?
The native Switch 2 release uses Vibrant Visuals as its default presentation, adding enhanced lighting, shadows, and other graphical effects. Supported Marketplace content can also use the feature. The Nintendo-exclusive Super Mario Mash-Up Pack has been updated to take advantage of it.
There are limits. Mojang says Vibrant Visuals is unavailable in some gameplay situations, including split-screen and certain Marketplace worlds or content. Families planning local couch multiplayer should not expect the enhanced mode to remain active in every split-screen session.
The new version also arrives alongside Minecraft’s evolving preview features. Our Brittle Ice and Ice Caves guide explains how experimental content differs from the stable retail build.
The Minecoin rule changes on October 27
Minecoins purchased on a Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 starting October 27 can be spent only within the Nintendo ecosystem. Minecoins purchased on another platform after that date cannot be used for Marketplace purchases on Nintendo devices.
Existing balances are protected. Mojang says Minecoins owned before October 27 move into a Legacy Wallet, remain usable across compatible platforms, and do not expire. That legacy balance is spent before newer platform-specific currency.
This creates a practical rule for families: buy new Minecoins on the ecosystem where the child actually plays and shops. The Microsoft account may synchronize eligible Marketplace purchases, but the newly purchased currency itself is separated by platform.
What should returning players do before launch?
- Confirm that the Nintendo Account used on Switch 2 is linked to the correct Microsoft account.
- Back up important worlds through the transfer options available to your account or Realm.
- Open Nintendo eShop with the account that owns the digital Switch version and look for the free Standard Edition offer.
- Review your Minecoin balance before making a new purchase after October 27.
- Keep the old Switch version installed until your worlds and Marketplace access appear correctly on Switch 2.

Which edition should you choose?
Digital Switch owners should claim the free Standard upgrade first unless they already want the named add-ons and Minecoins. New players who only want Minecraft and the Mario pack should also start with Standard. Deluxe and Ultimate make sense when their included Marketplace content would otherwise be purchased separately.
The key deadline is the end of January 2027 for the free digital upgrade offer. The key launch-day caveat is that Minecoins bought after October 27 become platform-specific. Handle those two details correctly, and the move to Switch 2 should be much simpler.
