Nintendo Switch Sports Resort launches October 22, 2026 for $49.99, exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2. The game uses motion controls across 12 sports, but its controller requirements are not identical in every event. Original Joy-Con controllers work in some sports, while Skateboarding specifically uses the mouse controls built into Joy-Con 2.
Do you need a Nintendo Switch 2?
Yes. Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is a Switch 2 exclusive. It is not an expansion for the 2022 Nintendo Switch Sports game and it does not have a version for the original Switch.
That distinction can be easy to miss because the name sounds like a larger content pack. It is a separate $49.99 game set on Wuhu Island, the resort introduced in Wii Sports Resort. A Switch 2 console is therefore the first requirement, even if you already own Nintendo’s earlier sports game.
Do original Joy-Con controllers work?
They work in at least some activities. Nintendo says Power Cruising can use any pair of Joy-Con controllers and Tennis can use any Joy-Con as a racket. Those descriptions include original Joy-Con as well as Joy-Con 2.
Skateboarding is different. It uses a Joy-Con 2 controller as a mouse so players can grind rails, slide, and perform tricks. The original Joy-Con does not have that mouse function. Nintendo also warns that additional accessories may be required for local multiplayer, so a household with only the two controllers attached to the console may need another pair.
The safe rule is not “old Joy-Con work everywhere” or “Joy-Con 2 are required for everything.” Compatibility varies by sport. Check the controller prompt before starting a local session.
Which 12 sports are included?
The package mixes two new activities with ten returning sports:
- New: Thumb Wrestling and Skateboarding
- Returning: Power Cruising, Archery, Bowling, Table Tennis, Boxing, Prop Plane, Tennis, Volleyball, Basketball, and Golf
Jump Rope also appears as a warm-up activity. Nintendo has not presented it as one of the 12 headline sports.
The lineup is broader than the launch version of Nintendo Switch Sports, but it leans heavily on familiar Wii-era ideas. The main differences are the Wuhu Island setting, Switch 2 controls, and activities such as Skateboarding that would not work the same way on older hardware.
Can you play locally and online?
Nintendo says the sports support solo play and multiplayer, both in person and online. Online features require a Nintendo Account and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. Local player counts and controller requirements can vary by sport, so not every activity should be assumed to support the same group size.
For families, local play is the strongest reason to consider the game. For solo players, the value depends more on online matchmaking and whether the 12-event lineup can hold attention after the novelty of motion controls fades.
Is the $49.99 price worth it?
It looks reasonable if you regularly play party games, want Wuhu Island back, or have enough controllers for a group. It is harder to justify if you already stopped playing Nintendo Switch Sports after a few weeks. The new setting and two new sports do not automatically solve that game’s repetition problem.
There is also a $529.99 Switch 2 bundle that includes Sports Resort. Buyers who do not yet own the console should compare that package with standalone hardware rather than treating the included game as free.

The simple buying decision
Buy Nintendo Switch Sports Resort if you have a Switch 2, enjoy motion-control party games, and can make use of local or online multiplayer. Wait if you mainly play alone or need confirmation that your existing controllers support a specific sport. Most original Joy-Con owners will not need to replace every controller, but Joy-Con 2 remains necessary for features built around its mouse sensor.
