Gears of War: E-Day Early Access Is Live: Who Can Play Today?

Gears of War: E-Day early access is live on October 1, but owning Game Pass does not automatically unlock the game today. The five-day head start belongs to Premium Edition players. Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members enter on the worldwide release date, October 6.

That distinction matters because Microsoft’s pre-install is open to both pre-order customers and Game Pass subscribers, which can make a downloaded game look ready before the account is actually entitled to launch it. Here is the clean breakdown for U.S. players.

When does Gears of War: E-Day early access begin?

Early access begins Thursday, October 1 at 8 a.m. Pacific / 11 a.m. Eastern. It is a single global start time, so there is no useful reason to change your console region. The worldwide launch follows on Tuesday, October 6 at the same time: 8 a.m. Pacific / 11 a.m. Eastern.

Microsoft’s official Xbox Wire launch guide confirms both times and separates Premium early access from the standard Game Pass release.

Who can play on October 1?

You can start during early access if your account has one of these entitlements:

  • Premium Edition: $99.99 in the United States, including the base game and up to five days of early access.
  • Premium Edition Upgrade: $30 for players who already own the Standard Edition or have an eligible Game Pass Ultimate membership.

The Standard Edition costs $69.99 and unlocks on October 6. A basic pre-order of that edition does not grant the five-day head start. If you use the upgrade with Game Pass, remember that it adds Premium benefits but does not replace the subscription or grant permanent ownership of the base game.

When does E-Day arrive on Game Pass?

Gears of War: E-Day joins Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass on October 6. It is a day-one release, just not an October 1 release for standard subscribers. Microsoft does not list the game for lower console-only tiers on its official product page, so check the exact plan attached to your account rather than relying on the general Game Pass label.

If you have already pre-installed through Game Pass, leave the files in place. The download should become playable when the worldwide release unlocks. Pre-installing is not proof of early-access ownership.

Where can you play, and does progress carry over?

E-Day launches on Xbox Series X|S and PC through the Microsoft Store and Steam. There is no Xbox One version. The Microsoft Store version supports Xbox Play Anywhere, so one digital purchase can cover Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC while sharing saves, progression, and achievements.

Steam is a separate storefront license. Buying there does not give you an Xbox console copy through Play Anywhere. Our guide to how Xbox Play Anywhere differs from Steam explains the account and license split before you choose a store.

What does the Premium Edition add?

Beyond early access, the Premium Edition includes the Bravo Squad Signature Weapon Pack, five seasonal customization packs beginning with the Emergence Pack, and 1,000 Iron, the game’s premium currency. Those extras are mostly cosmetic and progression-adjacent. The campaign, Horde Siege, and Versus modes are part of the base game.

The practical buying decision is therefore simple. Pay the extra $30 if playing five days early and receiving the cosmetic bundle are worth it to you. If your main goal is the campaign or multiplayer with friends after launch, waiting until October 6 avoids paying for time-limited access.

What kind of Gears game is E-Day?

E-Day is an origin story set 14 years before the first Gears of War. It follows younger versions of Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as the Locust Horde erupts onto Sera. The campaign supports solo play, two-player split-screen on console, and online co-op. Multiplayer includes the four-player Horde Siege PvE mode and 4v4 Versus competition.

The game is built in Unreal Engine 5 and targets up to 4K and 60 frames per second on compatible hardware and displays. Online campaign co-op and multiplayer require a subscription that includes online console multiplayer when played on Xbox.

The short answer

If you want to play Gears of War: E-Day on October 1, you need the Premium Edition or the $30 Premium upgrade plus access to the base game. Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass unlock the standard release on October 6 at 8 a.m. Pacific / 11 a.m. Eastern. Pre-installing early saves time, but it does not move your unlock date.
