New Xbox PC App Is Up to 60% Faster: Who Gets It First?

Microsoft has started testing a redesigned Xbox app for Windows that it says can launch up to 60% faster. The update also reorganizes the game library, improves search, moves friends into the main navigation, and refreshes the interface. The important limitation is easy to miss: the faster app is rolling out to Xbox Insiders first, not every Windows player at once.

What is faster in the new Xbox PC app?

In its November 5 Xbox Wire announcement, Microsoft reports three headline improvements from its internal testing:

  • The Xbox PC app launches up to 60% faster.
  • Home, Store, and Game Pass pages load up to 50% faster.
  • Windows opened inside the app respond up to 65% faster.

Those numbers are best-case vendor measurements, not a guaranteed speedup for every PC. Microsoft says results vary with the device, internet connection, system configuration, usage, and other factors. A fast SSD may reduce some waiting, while slow authentication, network requests, or a crowded Windows installation can still affect startup.

The change targets the launcher itself. It does not promise higher frame rates, shorter in-game loading screens, or faster downloads. For game loading, technologies such as DirectStorage address a different part of the pipeline, as explained in our DirectStorage guide.

The library and search changes may matter more

Speed is the easiest improvement to advertise, but the navigation changes could save more time over a full week. Microsoft says the Library now has simpler navigation, updated filters, and additional ways to organize games. Search can return installed titles, add-ons, games, and people from one place.

Friends and social features are also moving into the main navigation. That should reduce the number of panels needed to see what someone is playing, begin a chat, or join a party. Home, Settings, game cards, and animations receive a cleaner visual treatment intended to make the app easier to scan.

This continues Microsoft’s push toward a single PC library that surfaces games installed through multiple supported storefronts. The new announcement does not mean every launcher has disappeared. Purchases, updates, account requirements, and some game management still depend on the original store.

Who can install the update today?

The first wave is for Xbox Insiders on Windows. To participate, install the Xbox Insider Hub, enroll in the relevant PC preview when it is available to your account, and update the Xbox app through the Microsoft Store. Preview access can arrive gradually, so joining the program does not guarantee the new interface appears immediately.

Players who prefer stability should wait for the wider release. Insider builds are test versions, and interface bugs or account-specific problems are possible. Microsoft has not provided a firm public release date for all Windows users in the announcement.

Xbox Cloud Gaming is changing too

The Windows app is only one part of the update. Microsoft says its refreshed Xbox Cloud Gaming website will reach more players automatically over the coming weeks. The web interface adds a Library tab for owned and Game Pass cloud titles, more sorting options, a desktop layout for large screens, dark and light themes, and five high-contrast choices.

Supported TVs and VR headsets are also beginning to receive a similar look and navigation. The goal is consistency across screens, but feature availability still depends on the device, region, subscription, and cloud catalog.

What to check if the Xbox app still feels slow

First update Windows, the Microsoft Store, Gaming Services, and the Xbox app. Restart the PC after the updates complete. If startup remains unusually slow, open Windows Settings, choose Apps, find Xbox, and use the repair option before attempting a reset. Resetting can require another sign-in and may clear local app data.

Also distinguish launcher delay from game stutter. The redesigned app cannot fix shader compilation pauses inside a game. Our shader compilation stutter guide explains why those hitches occur. Windowed-game latency and presentation are handled separately by the Windows setting covered in our Windowed Game Optimizations guide.

Should you join Xbox Insider for this?

Join if you regularly use the Xbox PC app, want the new library and social layout early, and accept preview software. Wait if the current app works reliably or the PC is used for competitive play and you do not want another variable. The update looks useful, but the “up to 60%” figure should be treated as Microsoft’s test result, not a reason by itself to install a preview build.
