RuneScape Reignited and Old School RuneScape share a world, a login system, and decades of history, but they are not two graphics settings for the same game. They have separate characters, different combat philosophies, different update systems, and very different ideas about what RuneScape should feel like.
What is RuneScape Reignited?
RuneScape Reignited is the new starting point for the modern live game. It builds on years of updates to graphics, combat, user interface, skills, and quests, then packages them with a clearer route for newcomers. Our RuneScape Reignited launch guide explains why players are calling it RuneScape 4 even though Jagex has not announced a numbered sequel.
The official Reignited overview promises a remastered journey beginning in Lumbridge, a Gielinor Adventure Guide, integrated community plugins, and a world without Treasure Hunter. Parts II and III of the remaster are planned for later in 2027.
Reignited is designed for players who want RuneScape’s current systems with a smoother entry point and modern presentation. It is still a huge sandbox, but Jagex is trying to reduce the moment where a new player opens the interface and wonders what to do first.
What is Old School RuneScape?
Old School RuneScape began in 2013 from a backup of the game as it existed in 2007. It kept the older visual style and combat foundation, then grew into its own MMO through years of separate updates.
Jagex describes OSRS as community-led. Proposed changes are polled, and the official site says content needs 75 percent approval to pass. That structure gives players unusual influence over the direction of the game, although developers still decide what reaches a poll and how approved ideas are implemented.
The official Old School overview lists 23 skills, hundreds of quests, and numerous raids and bosses. Its simple appearance hides demanding progression, precise combat techniques, a player-driven economy, and some of the hardest PvE challenges in the franchise.
Do progress and items transfer between them?
No. Jagex’s account support page confirms that one RuneScape account can access both versions, but each version has an independent character profile. Stats, items, quests, and bank contents do not move between modern RuneScape and Old School.
If you return to modern RuneScape, that is where Jagex says you will find your older modern profile and items. Starting Old School with the same account still means creating an OSRS character from scratch.
Which game has better combat?
That depends on what you want. Reignited inherits the modern game’s more active combat systems, ability-focused encounters, and extensive interface options. It suits players who enjoy MMO rotations, build optimization, and bosses designed around modern mechanics.
Old School starts with simpler point-and-click combat, but high-level play becomes surprisingly technical. Prayer switching, movement, tick timing, gear swaps, and resource management create depth without an action bar full of abilities. The learning curve is less visible, not necessarily smaller.
Which one is easier for a new player?
Reignited should be easier to understand at the beginning because the Adventure Guide is built to provide direction. It also offers modern visual feedback and quality-of-life systems. The December 2 to December 12 full-access period makes it the obvious version to sample first when Reignited opens.
Old School has a cleaner interface and fewer layers at the start, but its progression is intentionally slow. Many conveniences must be earned, and the game expects players to set their own long-term goals. Community guides are extremely helpful, but they can also make the experience feel like a checklist if followed too rigidly.
Choose Reignited if…
- You want modern graphics, guided progression, and official plugins.
- You prefer ability-based combat and newer quest presentation.
- You are returning to a modern RuneScape character with existing progress.
- You want to explore the 2027 remaster roadmap as it arrives.
Choose Old School if…
- You prefer the 2007-style look and deliberate progression.
- You want community polls to shape major updates.
- You enjoy a demanding economy, raids, PvP, and self-directed goals.
- You do not mind beginning with a completely separate character.
The best choice
Start with Reignited if you are new and want the clearest introduction to modern RuneScape. Choose Old School if the slower, community-led sandbox is the main attraction. Because one account can access both and progress stays separate, trying each version is safer than choosing based only on screenshots or nostalgia.
