RuneScape 4 is trending, but Jagex has not announced a numbered sequel. The real project is RuneScape Reignited, a major relaunch of the modern RuneScape experience that begins December 2. It brings together years of restoration work, a remastered journey, official plugins, better guidance for new players, and a version of Gielinor without Treasure Hunter.
Is RuneScape 4 actually real?
Not under that name. Jagex’s official RuneScape Reignited page never calls the project RuneScape 4. It describes Reignited as “the original adventure” entering a new chapter after 25 years.
That distinction matters because a numbered sequel usually suggests a separate game, a new client, and a clean break from the current live service. Reignited is presented as a rebuilt starting point for RuneScape itself. It combines recent improvements with new features and a multi-stage remaster rather than replacing Gielinor with an unrelated MMO.
The sudden interest in “RuneScape 4” makes sense. The scale of the changes, the fresh branding, and the promise of a new beginning all sound like sequel language. For now, however, RuneScape 4 is a search term used by players, not the official product name.
When does RuneScape Reignited launch?
RuneScape Reignited begins on December 2, 2026. Jagex also confirms full Reignited access without membership from December 2 through December 12. That ten-day window gives returning and new players a chance to explore the relaunch before deciding whether they want the complete membership experience afterward.
The December date is the start, not the end of the overhaul. Jagex says Parts II and III of the remastered journey will arrive later in 2027. A large 2027 content roadmap begins in January, including new story chapters, grandmaster-level quests, returning characters, and long-lost locations.
What changes with Reignited?
The most visible promise is a remastered journey that starts in Lumbridge and eventually reaches the wider game. Jagex says the work covers both gameplay and graphics. The project also introduces the Gielinor Adventure Guide, a clearer path through the MMO’s enormous catalog of quests, skills, and activities.
That guide addresses one of RuneScape’s oldest problems. Freedom is part of the appeal, but a new player can log in, see decades of systems, and have no idea what deserves attention. Reignited aims to provide direction without turning the sandbox into a rigid campaign.
Officially supported plugins are another major change. Jagex specifically mentions tools such as Quest Helper and says community-developed plugins will be integrated into the game. This should give players useful quality-of-life options without forcing them to rely on unverified third-party software.
What is happening to Treasure Hunter?
Jagex says the Reignited world will have no Treasure Hunter, ever. The landing page also highlights the removal of Hero Pass and describes Evolution of Combat as a thing of the past. These decisions are part of a broader effort to restore player trust and put the core adventure back at the center.
That does not mean every form of monetization disappears. RuneScape remains a free-to-play MMO with an optional membership model. The confirmed change is specifically about removing unpopular systems and offering the full Reignited experience without membership during the December 2 to December 12 access period.
Do existing characters carry over?
Jagex has not presented Reignited as a separate numbered game, and its current support documentation still describes modern RuneScape as the place where returning players find their old profiles and items. The Reignited page, however, emphasizes beginning the journey anew and does not provide a detailed migration FAQ.
Players should therefore avoid assuming either a mandatory wipe or a completely isolated fresh-start character until Jagex publishes account-specific rules. The safest confirmed reading is that Reignited reshapes the current RuneScape experience, while exact progression options still need a dedicated explanation.
The practical answer
RuneScape 4 is not the official name of a newly announced sequel. RuneScape Reignited is a large-scale relaunch beginning December 2, with ten days of full access without membership and more remaster phases coming in 2027. It is ambitious enough to feel like a new generation of RuneScape, but Jagex is framing it as a restoration and expansion of the original adventure.
