You do not permanently own most games obtained through PlayStation Plus. Monthly Games that you claim stay in your library, but you can play them only while your membership is active. Games from the Extra and Premium catalogs work differently: access can end when your subscription changes or when Sony removes the title from the catalog.
The confusion comes from PlayStation Plus using the word “games” for several license types. Claiming a Monthly Game, downloading a catalog title, buying a discounted game, and testing a trial do not create the same rights. Here is how each one works.
Monthly Games stay in your library, with a condition
Every PlayStation Plus tier includes Monthly Games. You must add each title to your library during its monthly claim window. Once claimed, it remains attached to your account and can be downloaded later, even after that month’s offer ends.
The condition is an active PlayStation Plus membership. If your subscription expires or you cancel it, the claimed games become locked. They are not deleted from your account, and resubscribing should restore access to previously claimed Monthly Games.
Sony’s official PlayStation Plus games page states that Monthly Games can be added to your library and played at any time as long as you have an active membership plan. This applies whether you subscribe to Essential, Extra, or Premium.
Game Catalog titles are not claimed forever
The Game Catalog is an on-demand library for Extra and Premium members. Downloading a catalog game does not lock it to your account in the same way as a Monthly Game. You can play while two conditions remain true:
- Your Extra or Premium membership is active.
- The game is still included in the catalog.
If Sony removes the title, access ends even if it remains installed and your subscription is paid through a later date. The same general rule applies to the Classics Catalog for Premium members.
This is why announcements about games leaving PS Plus matter. Our earlier report on titles leaving the PlayStation Plus catalog illustrates the difference: downloading before the removal date did not convert those games into permanent licenses.
What happens if you downgrade your PS Plus tier?
Dropping from Premium or Extra to Essential does not remove Monthly Games you previously claimed. Essential still includes the Monthly Games benefit, so those titles remain playable while the lower-tier membership is active.
You do lose benefits tied to the higher tier when the downgrade takes effect. Extra Game Catalog downloads become unavailable, while Premium-only Classics, trials, and cloud-streaming access also end. Sony says a downgrade begins after the current prepaid subscription period, not immediately when you schedule the change.
The US PlayStation Plus plan page lists Monthly Games across all three tiers and reserves the Game Catalog for Extra and Premium. That tier distinction is more important than whether a game is already installed.
What if you bought the game with a PS Plus discount?
A normal PlayStation Store purchase is different from a subscription download. If you paid for a game using a member discount, the purchased license remains tied to your account after PS Plus ends. The subscription changed the price, not the ownership status.
Check the transaction history when the console shows a padlock. A zero-dollar Monthly Game claim, a catalog download, and a discounted purchase can look similar in the library, but the receipt identifies which license you received.
Does purchased DLC keep a catalog game playable?
No. Buying an expansion, season pass, or cosmetic pack does not create ownership of the base game. If the catalog title leaves or your qualifying membership ends, the installed game can become locked and the add-on cannot be used until you regain access to the base game.
If you expect to keep playing after a removal date, compare the cost of buying the base game before spending heavily on DLC. Sony sometimes discounts departing titles, but a sale is not guaranteed.
Why is a claimed game showing a padlock?
First confirm that PlayStation Plus is active on the account that originally claimed the game. Then check whether it was a Monthly Game or a catalog download. If it was a catalog title, search the current catalog to see whether it has left the service.
If the membership and entitlement are still valid, use the console’s Restore Licenses option and restart the system. Also verify Console Sharing and Offline Play settings if another account is trying to launch the game.
The simplest rule is this: Monthly Games remain in your library but require an active membership; catalog games require both the correct tier and continued catalog availability; games you actually purchase remain yours. Remembering those three license types prevents most PS Plus surprises.
